About
Alcónes Negros bring experience and innovation to the tradition of mariachi music. Hailing from the American southwest, each member of the band brings decades of experience to the project and a unique skillset and approach to Mexican folk music. Roberto Lucero grew up with traditional music in his family in northern New Mexico and also trained in classical piano and symphonic brass. He founded and directed Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford and now directs the Mariachi ensemble course at the University of New Mexico music department. He is a frequent teacher at the Albuquerque Mariachi Spectacular and the Tucson International Mariachi Festival. Roberto specializes in trumpet, vocals, and guitar and plays many other instruments. He also directs, arranges, and composes. He is based in Albuquerque, NM. Adrian Perez, based in Tucson, AZ, is a recognized harpist amongst the folk arts community with an emphasis on styles from the western states of Mexico (Jalisco and Michoacan) as well as the southern coasts of Veracruz. He learned and performed with Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano and Mariachi Cobre, among others. He has accompanied many greats on the stage including Juan Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt, Los Tigres del Norte, Placido Domingo and many others. He is an accomplished harpist but also plays guitar, vihuela, guitarron, as well as being a singer. He teaches at many mariachi conferences across the country and was an invited guest and performer at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
