On his EP “Monopoly Money,” St. Louis-based producer, multi-instrumentalist, and one-man band baegel channels the spirit and virtuosity of guitarist Spanky Alford, who helped shape the sounds of neo-soul through his work with artists like D’Angelo, Anthony Hamilton, Roy Hargrove, and Raphael Saadiq. Fluid double-stop melodies and ornamented soul-jazz lines characterize baegel’s guitarwork, which he balances with his capabilities as a keyboardist, bassist, drummer, trumpetist, and arranger.
