What counts as a YouTube view in 2026?
Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts the moment a video starts playing as a public view. There’s no minimum watch time, and the rule applies across all formats: long-form videos, Shorts, and live streams.
Before this change, long-form videos required more watch time to secure a view. YouTube never published an exact figure, but creators generally agreed that around 30 seconds of watch time counted as a view. That barrier is now gone.
Why did YouTube change how views are counted?
YouTube changed how it counts views to align view-counting systems across all video formats. An official announcement from the platform noted:
“Historically, we’ve used multiple view counting systems across different formats. However, we’ve heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we’re making this update!”
What counts as a view on YouTube Shorts in 2026?
Since March 31, 2025, every video start or replay counts as a view on YouTube Shorts, with no minimum watch time. The August 2026 update brings long-form and live videos up to speed with Shorts.

Does YouTube count your own views?
YouTube counts your own views as genuine views. However, repeat refreshes or rewatches of your own content can look suspicious, and YouTube may treat such activity as spam.
This applies to multi-watching methods in general, whether the video’s your own or someone else’s. For example, fans of a musician might open their latest video in multiple tabs on several devices to try and bump the numbers up. YouTube monitors this kind of low-quality viewing behavior and may not count the multiple views as a result.
What counts as a view on YouTube ads?
Views on YouTube ads are counted in three different ways: TrueView views, public views, and organic views.
TrueView views
TrueView shows how many times viewers engage with your ad, rather than just impressions. TrueView views vary depending on the ad format:
- In-feed video ads: A viewer clicks on the thumbnail and is taken to watch the video, or watches the video autoplay inline for at least 10 seconds.
- YouTube Shorts ads: A viewer watches 10 seconds or the whole ad (whichever comes first), clicks the CTA, or clicks the “Like,” “Comments,” or “Share” button. If they watch the ad, swipe away, then swipe back to the same ad, it doesn’t count as an extra view.
- Skippable in-stream ads: A viewer watches 30 seconds or the whole ad (whichever comes first), or clicks an element of your ad like a CTA, banner, logo, or thumbnail.
- Bumper and non-skippable in-stream ads: Views aren’t counted, as the ads can’t be skipped.
Public views
Public YouTube ad views count toward your ad’s public view count, which everyone can see. Similar to public views for “regular” YouTube content, these views count the moment a video ad plays on:
- In-feed video ads
- Shorts ads
- Skippable in-stream ads
- Non-skippable in-stream ads
- Bumper in-stream ads
Public views help you understand your ad’s exposure, rather than deeper engagement metrics. As well as the above criteria, public view count includes organic views. These combined factors may explain why an ad for Facebook Groups is one of the world’s most-viewed YouTube videos.
Organic views
Organic views show how many times viewers have watched your video organically on YouTube, rather than as an ad. They contribute to your ad’s public view count.

What are engaged views on YouTube?
Engaged YouTube views show how many people actually stayed to watch your video, rather than just clicking on it. Engaged views are used to calculate how much creators earn through the YouTube Partner Program. There’s no publicly available percentage, but the general consensus is 30 seconds equals one engaged view.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because before August 2026, this is how views were counted for long-form YouTube content. They’re now just called “engaged views” to differentiate from the newer, low-threshold public views.
What are real-time views on YouTube?
Real-time views show how your video’s performing on YouTube right now, rather than waiting to compile daily figures. These views are shown by the hour or the minute, and are accessible through YouTube Analytics.
It’s worth noting that real-time views are estimates, and may change as YouTube verifies data. Once a day’s views are done and dusted, they’ll probably differ from initial real-time views. Content based on viral trends, influencer videos, and branded campaigns can all use real-time views to gauge immediate launch performance. They shouldn’t be used for final reporting.
Public YouTube views are now a measurement of reach, not engagement. If you want people to stay with your content, you’ll need to keep them hooked. One way to do that is with music.
Epidemic Sound has more than 55,000 tracks by real artists. Smart tools to help you find, edit, and sync music in your video. Globally cleared licensing. No surprises.

Frequently asked questions about YouTube views
What percentage of a YouTube video counts as a view?
There is no set percentage. As long as someone starts watching a video, it counts as a view. There’s no minimum watch time, and views are counted in the same way across long-form content, Shorts, and live streams. Engaged views, which are used to pay creators through the YouTube Partner Program, need more than just a click; viewers have to keep watching the video.
Why is my YouTube view count frozen?
YouTube may slow down, freeze, or alter your view count while it verifies which views are “real.” For example, it may remove views from someone watching the same video across several tabs, or views from bots.
Do YouTube’s updated view rules affect my monetization?
No. YouTube itself stated that the August 2026 update does not affect YouTube Partner Program earnings or eligibility. Monetization still relies on engaged views, which are different from public views.
If I watch a YouTube video 10 times, does it count as 10 views?
Yes, but with a caveat. If you watch a video 10 times over the course of a week, the views will probably be counted as valid. If you watch it 10 times in a row, in multiple tabs, or on multiple devices, YouTube may treat the activity as suspicious and invalidate the views.
